Goldsmiths management is pushing through a reorganisation programme which would cut about 25% of staff. This shrinking of staff will affect the programmes offered, the modules available, the time remaining staff can dedicate to students, etc. A previous restructuring in 2022 resulted in overstretched academic and administrative staff with a predictable impact on education and student support – see the letter by the post-graduate students who witnessed this first-hand. The current restructure is supposedly based on financial concerns, but there are questions about its viability.
None of this is inevitable; alternatives are possible; cutting 25% of staff is not a solution to a problem but the start of a much bigger one.
