We unequivocally condemn SMT’s attempt to suppress on-campus protest against the privatisation of higher education by threatening the Students’ Union with a £15,000 fine in the event of future direct action. The decision to hold the Student Union financially accountable for a spurious court order to remove a peaceful occupation constitutes a punitive measure inconsistent with the College’s mission statement valuing “a transformative experience, generating knowledge and stimulating self-discovery through creative, radical and intellectually rigorous thinking and practice.” We join the Students’ Union in demanding an immediate retraction of this threat.
