Strike Days
The days of our National Strike are due to take place on Thurs 24, Friday 25 and Weds 30 November 2022.
Given how short the strike period is this term, it’s important to have a big turnout and we are calling on all members to join us on the picket line on these days. Picket lines will run from 8-1pm (or 8-12noon on Weds 30th in time for people to make it to Kings X for the national UCU demonstration). A number of entrances will be covered – show up at the front entrance of RHB first, to find out where people are needed! This is a great opportunity to get together with colleagues in unison with university workers across the country and to show the strength of our resolve. Please join us – anytime between 8.30-1pm (if you can commit to a particular time slot that would be great, but don’t feel you have to be there for the whole thing – we generally split between 8.30-10.30 and 10-30-1pm but you can also come anytime).
Hot drinks, breakfast and talks on the picket line
We will be hosting another great series of events and talks on the picket line. There is a planning document where you can add suggestions for a top or speakers – the google doc has been shared with all members for you to add suggestions.
We are also organising a solidarity breakfast on the 24th and warm drinks for the duration of the strike. If you are interested in getting involved you can do so by joining the WhatsApp group link share to all members.
Staff-Student Assembly 1.30-2.30pm in SU lounge
After the pickets, we will get together to warm up, eat lunch, debrief from the picket lines, discuss our action and other struggles in common between staff and students.
UCU National Demonstration for education
On Weds the 30th of November there will also be a national UCU demonstration in London, meeting at 1pm at Kings Cross Station. Goldsmiths UCU will be running picket lines until 12.00. We will have a brief rally at 12.00 before heading down to the demonstration.
ASOS
Alongside the strikes, ASOS (Action Short Of a Strike) will come into effect on 23 November. Being on ASOS means that we cannot be compelled to make up or replace work lost during strike days and includes working to rule and refusing to cover for absent colleagues.
Declarations
While on strike, it is important to remember that there is no official system that we legally must follow to declare strike days. That means we do not legally need to fill out the college’s strike declaration form. We are free to declare our strike days in any form that we feel appropriate.
Strike Fund
Any income lost due to the strike action can be claimed back from the National UCU Solidarity Fund and from our local GUCU Solidarity Fund. To support our colleagues who are on more precarious contracts, we are asking for donations to our local fund. To donate, simply click here: https://goldsmithsucu.org/donations/strikefund/
