To be discussed at GUCU branch meeting, Tues 3 March, 1-2.30pm, New Cross House
Goldsmiths UCU
(a) are highly concerned about the sudden announcement by Goldsmiths to close its campus community fitness facility at the end of march 2020.
(b) understand that the gym is regarded by many of its 1500 members , including former students, current students, local residents and staff as a ‘safe space’ place of community and an essential support for their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing…and support their campaign to save it.
(c) believe there are many options available for the facility to be taken ‘in house’ to protect the essential role it plays in supporting the diverse group who use it, which includes all ages, races, classes, financial backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities.
(d) resolves to formally request that the Warden of Goldsmiths halts all proposed changes until there can be meaningful consultation with all relevant stakeholders, (including meetings with unions and gym members), and to work with the constituency MP, Vicky Foxcroft, and the Mayor, Damien Egan to ensure that there is an acceptable outcome for all parties.
