Goldsmiths UCU Exec is aware of the disproportionate effect that Action Short of Strike (ASOS) deductions have on our casualised members. We are also concerned that repayment of wrongful deductions made as a result of non-compliance with the Opt-Out Form in February and March will not be made quickly enough to not put casualised members in a complicated position. As a result of that, we have opened up our hardship fund to help bridge the difficult times, which you can access using this form.
The form is primarily for casualised members claiming for pay lost as a result of participating in the Marking and Assessment Boycott (MAB), e.g. where expected income is lost or delayed because the work is not being completed. Staff suffering hardship as a result of wrongful deductions may also use this form to claim temporary support while awaiting reimbursement from the employer.
By making this application, you agree to reimburse GUCU at a later date, should you eventually receive from Goldsmiths the lost pay that is the basis for your claim (e.g. where you are paid for completing the marking at a later date; or where you receive a reimbursement from Goldsmiths for wrongfully deducted pay). In this event, you are asked to make a donation, equal to the amount that you received, to the GUCU strike fund using these bank details.
In the event that you do not receive the lost pay from Goldsmiths (e.g. because the marking is reassigned to someone else following the MAB), there is no expectation that you make a repayment to GUCU.
Permanent staff wishing to apply for financial support in lieu of deductions made by Goldsmiths due to strike action should use the regular form. We ask permanent and full time staff to donate as much as they are able to the strike fund.
