Branch Motion on Health and Safety amended and passed at GUCU branch meeting 23.09.2020
This Branch notes:
- The heightened level of concern in relation to the Health and Safety provisions for a return to campus;
- That the College has now moved to alert level 4 and red scenario under its own policies;
- That College has not demonstrated a sufficient level of risk assessment, nor has it put into place, the requisite investment in suitable control measures to protect staff, students and visitors to the College;
- That by committing itself to a business plan in which the shedding of staff is a priority, it makes the enterprise of working safely increasingly unlikely and this impacts upon precarious workers and those with protected characteristics, placing them at further risk;
- That as a workplace, the College therefore poses a potentially significant risk to its own population but also to the general public, living in, and using the local area.
This branch demands
- A review of the institutional risk assessment and the right to interpret it as requiring more time to implement a higher level of mitigations;
- In the interim that all teaching should be remote and students supported in halls and accommodation,
- This position should continue until the R-rate is under control and the aforementioned control measures successfully implemented.
- That appropriate safety measures are put in place for performance-based face-to-face teaching
This branch resolves:
- To call a Covid-19-based Health and Safety dispute should these demands not be met prior to 5 October
