Notes

1. Sector Conference on USS: call for delegates

On the 31st January, UCU will be holding a sector conference for HE branches in the pre-1992 Universities to determine where we go next in our on-going pensions dispute. Branches may submit two motions and send two delegates to the conference. Call for nominations.

2. Emergency Motion on USS Dispute for Sector Conference

The following motion has been proposed by the branch Executive for the special HE sector conference at the end of the month.

Sector conference notes:

  • The huge success and popularity of the 30 November strike in mobilising opposition to attacks on public sector pensions
  • The importance of linking, but not subordinating, our USS dispute to the broader public sector pension dispute
  • The continuing resistance to the attacks on public sector pensions by several unions including PCS, Unite and the NUT

Sector conference agrees:

  • To oppose the suspension of action as proposed in UCU HE129
  • Immediately to draw up a timetable to escalate our industrial action and to plan for rolling regional, national, and UK-wide strikes as well as effective forms of action short of a strike
  • To coordinate our action, wherever possible, with action taken by other UCU members over TPS as well as action taken by other unions in defence of their pensions

3. Anti-Casualisation Committee Meeting

The UCU Anti-Casualisation Committee represents UCU fixed-term and hourly paid staff and campaigns against the abuse of casual contracts throughout tertiary education.

We are looking for two delegates to represent the branch at the annual meeting of the very important Anti-Casualisation committee that represents hourly-paid and sessional staff. The meeting takes place at UCU HQ on Friday 9 March from 10am-4pm. Call for nominations.

4. Solidarity with London Metropolitan University

On Friday January 13th 2012, London Metropolitan University announced the following:

1) the intention to tender the ‘process re-engineering’ of its entire in-house administrative services to private companies on the basis that those services are to be reconstituted as so-called ‘shared services’ thus threatening the jobs and conditions of most, if not all, London Met’s administrative grade staff;

2) the intention to make redundant 229 staff posts across the university’s seven academic faculties. 201 of those posts amongst academic grade staff. The announcement entailed the emailing of ALL faculty staff informing them that they were ‘at risk of redundancy’. The primary rational given for such a huge job cull being ‘the delivery of the new undergraduate and postgraduate portfolio in 2012/13’. This follows the cutting of some 70% of UG courses and projected PG course cuts following the anticipated outcome of the post-graduate and research review due this March.

In parallel with these attacks, and no doubt a concomitant of, London Met UCU believe that London Met management are currently in talks with a number of private education institutions in regard to forming ‘strategic partnerships’.

Suggested motion:

This branch condemns the actions of London Metropolitan University management, and resolves to send messages of support and solidarity to:
m.campbell@londonmet.ac.uk (UCU)
m.watson@londonmet.ac.uk (Unison)

Please note that the branch administrator is away the week of the GM and is therefore not present at this meeting. The administrator can be reached by email at gucu-admin@gold.ac.uk and will be back in the office on the 5th of February.

Anti-casualisation annual meeting

We are looking for two delegates to represent the branch at the annual meeting of the very important Anti-Casualisation committee that represents hourly-paid and sessional staff. The meeting takes place at UCU HQ on Friday 9 March from 10am-4pm. Please go to http://www.ucu.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=2751 if you want more information, and contact gucu-adminATgold.ac.uk if you’re interested in going.

General Meeting 25 Jan 2012: Call for Motions on USS Dispute

The branch’s General Meeting will take place at 12noon on Wednesday the 25th of January in the Ben Pimlott Building Lecture Theatre.

A special sector conference on the USS dispute has been called for 31 January. We need, at the general meeting, to pass relevant motions and to select delegates. Motions must relate only to the current USS dispute and be no longer than 150 words. Please send motions to gucu-admin@gold.ac.uk by 11 January.
