Call to build a strong, united grass roots movement inside UCU

The following motion was passed unanimously by GUCU executive 03.06.2019

“After the extraordinary result of the recent election for UCU General Secretary in which rank and file candidates secured nearly 75% of first preference votes, we believe that there is now a fantastic opportunity to build a strong and united grass roots movement inside UCU. We face a wide range of challenges – including stagnating pay, funding cuts, attacks on pensions, entrenched casualisation, endemic discrimination and growing redundancies – which will require a determined response from members. In this context, we are calling on all rank and file forces inside UCU to work together to defend the interests of our members and to organise effective campaigns. We also support the idea of a conference in the autumn term so that we may discuss – democratically and respectfully – how best to resist the very real threats to our jobs and to the sector as a whole.”

We urge other branches, Executives and members to support this statement. Please send all signatories to g.khiabany@gold.ac.uk
